Striker Kylian Mbappé delivered another subdued and disappointing performance for Real Madrid on Wednesday, as he failed to trouble Liverpool's defense and missed a penalty in their 2-0 Champions League defeat at Anfield.
Since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in June, the Frenchman has struggled to find his form at Real Madrid, managing only one goal in five Champions League matches. He has scored just once in his last six games across all competitions. However, manager Carlo Ancelotti came to his defense after Wednesday’s match, describing Mbappé as an "extraordinary" player who simply requires support and patience to succeed in Spain.
“It’s a difficult moment for him,” Ancelotti said. “We need to support him and give him our love; he will soon be fine. It could be a lack of confidence. Sometimes you go through periods when things aren’t working out. But you get through these moments. People miss penalties; it happens often. We can’t be too harsh on him for that. He is working hard, and he needs to keep fighting. Right now, things just aren’t going his way, but we have to be patient. He’s an extraordinary player.”
Ancelotti also acknowledged that Liverpool deserved to win the match. “To be totally honest with you, it was a fair result,” he stated. “They have a great dynamic at the moment; they are switched on and play with high intensity.”
Despite Real’s current position as 24th in the 36-team league and the risk of missing out on the knockout phase, Ancelotti remains confident that their form will improve. “I don’t think this game was decisive,” he added. “We’ll be there; we’ll be competing in the knockout phase, just as we have in previous years.”
Midfielder Jude Bellingham echoed his manager’s sentiments, acknowledging that Liverpool outplayed them. “They were more up for it than we were, which is very disappointing. This is a bad result against the best-performing team in Europe,” he said. “We are disappointed with our performance, and it is crucial that we win our next three games to give ourselves a chance to advance.”
Bellingham also expressed support for Mbappé. “He is a wonderful player, but the pressure on him because of his talent is enormous. The penalty isn’t the reason we lost the game; they performed better than us. I’m confident he will deliver many more significant moments for this club.”
