President-elect Donald J. Trump has chosen Mike Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, to serve as his ambassador to Israel. This selection reflects Trump's commitment to appoint a loyal ally to a vital foreign position during a time of crisis in the Middle East.
If confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Huckabee, who is also a former pastor and has never held an overseas diplomatic role, will be instrumental in helping Mr. Trump fulfill his promise to bring the war in Gaza to a swift conclusion.

Mr. Huckabee has consistently demonstrated strong support for Israel, particularly during its military actions in Gaza, which began after Hamas attacked the country on October 7, 2023. In August, he expressed on social media that Hamas must "release all hostages and unconditionally surrender."
Earlier this week, Mr. Trump mentioned that he would ask another vocal supporter of Israel, Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, to serve as U.N. ambassador.
On the campaign trail, Mr. Trump frequently presented himself as Israel’s strongest ally and voiced support for the country’s right to defend itself. Although he has been less clear about how he would bring the conflict in Gaza to an end, analysts believe he is likely to steer U.S. foreign policy toward terms more favorable to Israel.
Mr. Huckabee served as the governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007 and ran for president in both 2008 and 2016. His daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is currently the governor of Arkansas and has served as Mr. Trump’s White House press secretary.
