The Reds hope to bounce back from an underwhelming campaign upon their return to the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool players to participate in defending and stay “influential” throughout games.

Klopp’s side struggled with defensive consistency throughout the 2022-23 season. Despite having a few fantastic performances, it seemed the Liverpool lines were too disconnected to carry out his pressing tactics.

The German boss seems determined to solve this problem next season, revealing his priorities in lineup selection.

Speaking in a press conference on Sunday, he said: “The ticket into the team will be the readiness to defend.

“I’ve never heard about a team being really successful with sloppy defending. It doesn’t happen.”

Darwin Nunez came into the pre-season on the back of a underwhelming debut campaign. But Klopp says the Uruguayan has already shown signs of improvement during the friendly fixtures.

“He was good, you can see he’s a handful, speed, typical goal scorer being there, smelling it and finishing it off,” Klopp said of Nunez.

“It’s the same for Darwin and all the other strikers. I know all about the quality they have and they need to do both – defend and be influential in all offensive situations.”

Liverpool smashed Leicester City 4-0 in their friendly game on Sunday. The Reds will now prepare to meet Bayern next week.
