The reigning Spanish champions hit back at the Barca president’s comments with a long video clip.

In a bold move, Real Madrid have fired back at their rivals, Barcelona, after allegations of being a “club of the regime” were made by Joan Laporta.

Through a powerful four-and-a-half-minute video, Real Madrid outlined Barcelona’s links to the former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco through archive footage and text.

The reigning Spanish and European champions cast a dark shadow over Barcelona’s past. They alleged the Catalan club offered Franco three medals and honorary membership and enjoyed more success during the Spaniard’s regime.

What did Laporta say to upset Real Madrid?

In an attempt to deflect attention from the referee payment scandal involving Barcelona and Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, Laporta made waves by taking a swipe at Real Madrid during a recent press conference.

The Barca president alleged referees favor Real Madrid, a ‘team of the regime’. This phrase is a nod to the infamous rule of Franco, which lasted almost 40 years. It implies that Los Blancos are seen as the establishment’s favored club.

“Real Madrid has been historically favored when it comes to refereeing decisions – historically and currently,” Laporta said. “A club that has always been considered as a team of the regime due to their proximity to power – be it political or economic power.”
